| Helping People Age with Independence and Dignity The Area Agency on Aging for Northeastern Vermont is a private, non-profit organization with a mission to help people age with independence and dignity. The Agency has been designated under the Older Americans Act as the Area Agency on Aging for Caledonia, Essex and Orleans Counties. This designation means that the Agency carries out programs that establish a coordinated system of services for older persons in this region. We are one of five Area Agencies on Aging in Vermont (sometimes known as Councils on Aging). View the list of the other four Agencies. Since 1979, this Agency has been providing nutrition and supportive services to seniors in the Northeast Kingdom. Anyone who is 60 or older (or a spouse) is eligible to participate in programs provided by the Agency and in most cases we can serve people regardless of their income. However, we do encourage people to contribute toward the cost of the service if they are able. The Area Agency on Aging is governed by a Board of Directors, has 32 employees and many volunteers. Some services, such as Information and Assistance and Case Management, are provided directly by Agency staff. Other programs, such as Senior Meals and Transportation, are largely contracted to other community based organizations. For information on any service or benefit for seniors or family caregivers, call the Senior HelpLine (1-800-642-5119) and we can put you in touch with the appropriate local resource. The Area Agency on Aging collaborates closely with a variety of community partners - senior centers, senior housing providers, nursing homes, transit providers, medical providers, adult day programs, community action agencies and mental health agencies. We work with the Community of Vermont Elders (COVE) to represent the concerns of older Vermonters in the Vermont Legislature and have achieved success in a number of areas, such as helping people pay for prescriptions and expanding mental health services. We facilitate the region’s Long Term Care Coalition and serve as the Designated Administrative Agency for the Medicaid Waiver Program. The Area Agency on Aging receives funding from a number of sources including the Older Americans Act, Medicaid, the State of Vermont, Green Mountain United Way, and northeastern Vermont cities and towns. Of particular importance are the donations we receive from participants in our programs and private donations from individuals and local businesses. Rules for acceptance and participation
in our programs are the same for everyone, without regard
to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability
or sexual orientation.
